I’m just gonna say it. It needs to be said. I can’t hold back any longer.

Breastfeeding in public doesn’t mean you have to show all your goods. You can successfully breastfeed while maintaining a standard of modesty.

I mean, let’s be real. I don’t care if you are feeding your baby, I don’t need to see it. Hear me out though, because I don’t think it’s gross to breastfeed. I successfully breastfed two of my own babes until nearly a year when they weaned themselves, so I think I’m well versed enough to speak on the topic. But to breastfeed modestly shows that I respect myself, my husband, and my children, enough to not expose myself to make a point. But, in efforts to not receive a bazillion emails bashing me for being a bad person… I’ll skip the rest of my thoughts and get on to the point.

So I know you’re wanting to know how to breastfeed modestly.

When I had Johannah, I was one of those mom’s who was way paranoid when even asked about breastfeeding. I was young, inexperienced, and would hide in the closest closed area to feed. I’ve fed in cars, bathrooms, closets, dressing rooms. If there was a secret of secret place, I found it. But when I had Elijah, I was no longer worried about hiding to breastfeed. I was confident that I would be able to breastfeed successfully without compromising my modest standards.

After some MAJOR research, I found brands that provided that experience I was looking for. From tried and true methods to some simple tips and tricks, I’ve combined a few great answers to that very question, “How to breastfeed modestly”.

Covered Goods

Covered Goods Nursing Cover is a lifesaver when it comes to learning how to breastfeed modestly.

I’m gonna be a little biased here, and say that this is my absolute favorite nursing accessory that there is. There’s nothing better than having one item that can be used multiple ways, and this four-way nursing cover is a lifesaver. PLUS, it’s not your average nursing cover. This thing is a stretchy, lightweight fabric that covers both the front and the back of you, ensuring that you’ll be fully covered- mah fave. The Covered Goods Nursing Cover is:

  •  a cart cover
  •  a car seat cover
  •  a scarf
  •  a nursing cover

You know all those people who fuss about putting a blanket over their kids head? Forget ’em. Sometimes you do things in life that aren’t comfortable, sometimes you do things that aren’t always fun, but sometimes they’re necessary. I mean, you wouldn’t walk around with your bosoms out any other time, would you? Besides, I haven’t breastfed for almost a year, and I still use this thing almost daily, my kids love to use them as a blanket. I told you this baby was good.

This is one of those “why didn’t I think of that” products. But, really is so good. Oh and Rupal, the MomBoss behind NursElet is as sweet as they come. This simple band is also multi-purpose.

I really wish I had one of these when I was nursing. Between holding my shirt with my chin while balancing a wobbly babe or forgetting which breast I used last for those midnight feedings, it could have totally come in handy. This option allowed my hands to be freed while breastfeeding and trying to stay covered.

This is the first I’ve seen of a nursing undershirt and I’m completely in love. I’m one of those people who wears an undershirt under everything, literally, and this thing is genius. It is strapless but comes with hooks that attach to your nursing bra straps.

  • Different colors
  • Lace
  • Slimming options

Using this shirt, there’s no need to fold one side of the shirt up or even pull down to stretch the material, leaving you more covered. Undercover Mama definitely made this with mamas in mind, and I also love that I’m able to adjust the height of coverage as well. It’s an all around top choice.

While breastfeeding modestly doesn’t mean a whole lot to everyone, finding companies that had me in mind meant a lot to me. I felt as though these companies knew the struggle of being a mom in a modern era, who wants the option to breastfeed in public (or at least not in hiding) and still be comfortably covered. These are options that will definitely serve you well when choosing to breastfeed modestly. Or even if you’re just wanting to breastfeed at all, you’ll want to hold tight to these tips.

(This post is purely my own opinion, and they have not been swayed in any way.)

  1. Thank you so much for the tips! Modesty is very important to me as well. I appreciate your thoughts and ideas!

  2. I feel like it is a sad day in age when we think breastfeeding is not modest. It wasn’t like this until the last hundred years when formula was introduced and widely used and women went back to work and that motherhood was looked on almost as second priority, and mothers weren’t supported by their “villages” anymore. I think this article gives some perspective about how we as a society have become twisted in our thoughts surrounding the issue of breastfeeding in public.

  3. I’m all for breastfeeding, as a matter of fact breast fed my three; however I agree and appreciate it when a mom does it in a more modest way. Thanks for sharing these three.

  4. My son won’t tolerate anything near his face while he’s nursing (like within 5 or more inches. Sometimes more). I do the layered method (nursing tank under another shirt), using nursing tops with the pull up part that can be used to cover the boob/part of the baby’s face, using a small blanket to just cover my boob. But he will constantly pull at the time and lift it up and away from his face. often exposing even more boob than I would had I just left it partially uncovered. So while these tips are great, they won’t work for everyone. I try to be modest while nursing in public, but realistically, it’s not always 100% possible. It will definitely depend on the baby.

  5. I don’t shy away from public nursing, I really dislike using big covers and such (I find them hot) and refuse to nurse in a bathroom. But I do like to be a bit modest and not have my whole breast showing. usually I use nursing tanks or plain tanks and a shirt over top because they offer just enough cover for me without covering my child or feeling like I’m ‘hiding’.

I don’t think there’s one right way, but it’s nice that moms have options so they can breastfeed in whatever way is comfortable for them 🙂 Thanks for the post, I’m going to check out the undercover tees! 🙂

I think public nursing is great, too! Even more so when women choose to do so modestly, whatever method they choose. You’d definitely benefit from the NursElet and UndercoverMama! The great part about Covered Goods is that it’s multi-use and its super breathable. Yay for nursing!! Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 🙂
